called the "Blue City", Jodhpur is situated on the eastern fringe
of the Thar Desert. Once the center of Rajput power in the
princely state of Marwar, it was a center of flourishing trade and
commerce in the medieval period. After Jaipur, it is the second
largest city in Rajasthan.
Life in Jodhpur is centered
around the Meherangarh fort, built by Rao Maldeo in the beginning
of the 16th century. It is glowing testimony to the chivalry,
honor and grandeur that characterized the land of Rajasthan. Built
in 1929 as a famine relief project, Umaid Bhawan Palace is a fine
example of Indo-Sarcenic architecture. Embellished with
fashionable interiors in the Art Deco style, it was designed by
the renowned Polish artist and decorator, S. Norblin. Jaswant
Thada and Government Museum are other places of interest.
