Constructed As A Holy Minar
The world famous
towering Qutub Minar, started in 1192 by Qutub-ud-din Aibak (1192-98),
breathes down the neck of the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque. There is a slight
difference of opinion as to its purpose: it probably was a tower of
victory, but then again it could have been built to be a minar (tower),
attached to the Quwwat-ul-Islam mosque, for the muezzin (priest) to
climb up top and call to the faithful for prayer. This last does
seem a bit far-fetched. It would be a very determined (also very young,
without any such impediments as gout and so on) muezzin who would climb
379 steps, five times a day, to call out to the faithful. and even then,
standing at the height of about 73m, the only audience that muezzin
could have hoped to attract was the birds; it is doubtful if he would
have got much attention from the sleeping faithfuls.
