The Vijay
Stambh
or the Victory Tower is 37 metres high imposing structure of nine
storeys. Raised by Rana Kumbha in 1458-68 to commemorate his victory
over Mahmud Khilji of Malwa in 1440, the tower bears many sculptures
of a secular nature on its exteriors.
Adjacent to the tower is the Mahasati, a spot where the Ranas (the
male members of the royal family) were cremated. There are many sati
stones, stones to commemorate women who committed suicide by
throwing themselve to their husband's funeral pyre.
